MDHSS Ordered School Closure

Good evening:

At 6:00 p.m. this evening Governor Whitmer announced that, due to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases and the burden this has placed on our hospitals and front line workers, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has moved the state back into a “modified” Phase 3 for at least the next three weeks.  While this only has to impact Michigan high school students, we have made the difficult decision to close all of our buildings and transition into remote learning for all Preschool through 12th grade face-to-face learners effective Wednesday, November 18, 2020.   Our plan is continue in this mode of learning until December 9, 2020; although this date could be pushed back depending upon evaluations made by the state.  Our virtual students will continue in their current learning mode.

All athletic events will be postponed effective immediately.  This includes practices and try-outs.  Any extracurricular activities or clubs will be postponed as well.  The Goodrich Children’s Center childcare program will remain open for currently registered students, depending upon need.

The goal of our district has been to maintain an in-person learning environment as long as we did not see transmission occurring within our classrooms or buildings and as long as we had the staff necessary to conduct day-to-day operations.  We know that so much more than learning happens within the walls of our buildings.  Our young people need the social and emotional growth that takes place at school.  I strongly believed that as long as we masked up, maintained proper physical distancing when possible, and practiced good hand hygiene, school was the safest place for our students to be.  But the one factor that was beyond our control was the activities of our families and staff outside of the school day. Even with our buildings closed, I cannot stress to you the importance of eliminating gatherings that bring individuals from separate households together, and unfortunately this includes the holidays.

I know you have questions and concerns.  Hopefully we will be able to address those in forthcoming communications in the coming days.

Thank you.

Wayne S. Wright
Superintendent of Schools

For the safety of our staff and community members, please conduct as much business as possible by phone or email.   Visitors inside our buildings will be required to wear masks and maintain proper social distancing.
