A new law is in effect starting Wednesday (March 27, 2019) that makes Cyberbullying a misdemeanor.  Cyberbullying includes posting messages, pictures or anything online that intentionally harasses or defames a person.  A first offense includes 93 days in jail and/or up to a $500 fine. However, if a person bullies another into harming themselves, they could face up to ten years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

“Nine times out of ten, the people who are actually doing the bullying are caught and are identified and now they can be prosecuted criminally, regardless of age, regardless of location, gender, anything else,” said Trooper Brett Nichols from the Michigan State Police Computer Crimes Unit..
